The Meaning of Baptism

The Greek word for baptism is Baptizo which means "to make whelmed" or " covered with water".
In other words we are literally buried as Jesus was buried in the tomb and we are resurrected out of the water
as Jesus was resurrected from the dead.

The Word on Baptism

"Therefore we were buried with Him through baptism into death, that just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory
of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life."
(Romans 6:4)

"Buried with Him in baptism, in which you also were raised with Him through faith in the working of God, who raised Him from the dead."
(Colossians 2:12)

Since the resurrection of Christ "water baptism" is the act of obedience that Believer's in Christ participate in directly after repentance
or the turning away of their "old nature" which is sin.

"Then Peter said to them, “Repent, and let every one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins;
and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit."
(Acts 2:38)
